Learning About Patterns with Extension Activities
Three Period Lesson
Patterns (from left to right):
Stripes, Chevron, Checked,
Plaid, Brick, Floral,
Paisley, Polka Dots
Introducing pattern vocabulary. Start with 3 types of patterns and increase the number as your child shows readiness.
First Period: “This is…” Your child can trace the pattern with their finger.
Second Period: “Where is…” “Show me…” “Pass me the…”
Third Period: “What is this?” (this period should not be done by children under 3)
Matching
Start with 3 pairs of patterns and increase the number of pairs as your child shows an understanding of the activity.
Memory
Start with 3 pairs and add more to increase difficulty

Lay the cards in rows, face down.

Take turns, turning over any two cards.

If the two cards match, keep them.

If they don't match, turn them back over.

Remember what was on each card and where it was.

Watch and remember during the other player's turn.

The game is over when all the cards have been matched.

Pattern Sort- use image, words or both depending on your
child’s level
NOTE: To use as vocabulary cards, print once and for
memory and matching activities, print TWO COPIES of the
pattern cards page.
Animal names (from left to right): Green Spotted Puffer fish,
Zebra, Spotted Salamander, Monarch Caterpillar, Ladybug, Bee,
Spotted Butterfly, Tiger
Other Extension Ideas:
Draw a line on a paper and use stickers to start a
pattern. See if your child can continue it!
Use blocks or other household items to create patterns. Share your ideas!
